How To Stop Procrastinating: College Student Guide

It’s a known fact that college (I mean classes and studying not parties) is boring. As a result, students tend to procrastinate by putting off tasks and assignments to the last minute before exams. Some of them even go to the exams without any preparation at all.

Although, some smart students manage to pass their exams. However, the majority fail.

One of the common reasons students procrastinate in college is that they don’t believe in it. Most students have lost their faith in the college system. The reason is obvious. They hear inspiring stories every day about young people who dropped out from college and started their startups and now they have companies that are worth millions of dollars.

It’s really confusing. The world has dramatically changed lately. The things that we used to think should be at the top of our priorities (college success as an example) have become less important. However, college is still important but not as it was 20 years ago.

How To Stop Procrastinating: Does College Really Matter?

Most people focus only on the practical side whenever they have a problem that’s related to self-help. It’s totally false. Self-change always starts from within. So, setting the right mindset is the KEY to any successful self-change process.

How To Stop Procrastinating

It’s crucial that you do really believe that college matters. If you don’t, then probably you won’t ever be able to stop procrastinating when it comes to homework or exams preparation.

In our case here, you need to be convinced that college matters before getting any step further. So, let’s talk a bit about why college is more important than you might think.

You may say that college failure is not the end of the world. You’re totally right, it’s not. But you should not be overly influenced by success stories of people such as Steve Jobs or Bill Gates.

Both Bill Gates and Steve Jobs left college and even though they had a huge impact on the world. But, what you may be missing is that there are millions of people around the globe who have left college and they ended up working in miserable jobs for small wages.

I’m not saying that you should settle, go to college and find a 9-5 job. I’m sure that life has more for us than just working in jobs we hate so that we can be able to pay our bills at the end of the month. Life is definitely more than that.

But, let’s face it! Not all people have been able to achieve their dreams and live the life they have imagined when they were young. I won’t get into the reasons for their failure because they would take an entire post and that’s not our issue here.

I have a better idea. What about doing both?

Get your college degree first and after that, you can build your own startup or whatever your dream is. Let’s take for example that you wanna be an entrepreneur.

In college, you’ll have some free time that you can use to start your own startup. You can start your startup with your classmates or friends. It might be the best way to start because you don’t have any bills to pay. It’s zero risks.

Many entrepreneurs started their first companies in college. College was the place when they’ve met their startup co-founders. Just take a look at this article from Entrepreneur magazine that talks about Why College Is the Perfect Time to Launch a Business to see what I’m talking about.

How To Stop Procrastinating

However, you shouldn’t neglect your studies. Develop a productivity mindset and learn how to manage your time effectively so that you can be able to balance college and your startup. It’s going to be difficult. But, keep in mind that all great things which are worth having are hard to get.

I’ve managed to prepare a list that contains some methods that I use personally to help me get into the mood of studying. I’d like to share them with you. Try them and let men know of the results.

Listen To Music While Studying

I started with this method because it’s my favorite. It’s my go-to method that I use whenever I have boring homework that needs to be done. So, I just put on my headphones and play my favorite music playlist. It’s really effective.

Music as you know gives us an outstanding feeling of excitement. It can motivate us and put us in the mood for anything. It’s a kind of magic actually.

I know you might think that this could be considered multitasking. So, that the brain won’t be focusing on the task and will be constantly distracted by music. You’re right. But, as I said above, I only use this method with boring and non-complicated tasks. They’re easy-to-do tasks that anyone can do. That’s why we called them boring.

Remove All the distractions

The removing distractions method is the most common method used by students. It’s the classic go-to strategy that still works and helps us stop procrastinating. It’s very simple, but hard to apply for some folks.

This method consists of removing all the surrounding distractions. So, first of all, you need to determine them and then figure out how to deal with them.

How To Stop Procrastinating

For instance, if your main distraction is social media. You can try Anti-Social App that can block any website that you want. This way you can certainly be more focused on the task in front of you. As a result, you’ll be able to finish your homework fast and its quality will be good.

This method will not only help you stop procrastinating. But, will also save you a great amount of time to do other things later.

Have Fun First

You may find this awkward. But, having fun before studying is an effective method. I’m serious. I use this all the time and let me assure you that the results are amazing. I know that you still think this is absurd. But, let me explain.

The main idea here is to first do what stops you from studying. Then, after doing that, there will be nothing to distract from your studies anymore.

For example, let’s say that you love playing video games and it’s the main thing that distracts you from studying. Let’s assume that you have homework due tomorrow. Using this method, you’ll start with playing video games for a couple of hours until you feel satisfied or bored. Then, you’ll tackle your homework with no regret at all because you’ll already have some fun.

I know this method can’t be helpful for people who are addicted to video games and who play all day long. But, it’s totally worth it for students who want to have some fun during the day and still do their homework.

On the other hand, you can use the opposite method which is to study first and then reward yourself. The reward can be the thing that you like doing. For example, watching TV series or playing video games for example. This method is also very effective.

How about trying them both and see what’s best for you?

It’s Okay To Ask For Help

One of the most common reasons for procrastination is fear. Some people get afraid whenever they have a difficult task. The cause of this fear is that they think they’re not good enough. They hate the feeling of weakness and stupidity which they get whenever they think about the task. So, in order to avoid this feeling, they just keep putting the task off.

We all have been through this experience dozens of times. It’s normal. Now, how can you overcome this fear? The answer is very simple: Ask for help.

There are two options. The first option is to ask for help from a friend, classmate, or family member. The second choice is to google it.

I recommend going with the second choice first. If you did find answers and the internet had helped you understand how to do the task, then the problem is solved. If not, you have no other choice but to ask someone else. What you should put in mind is that asking for help is totally normal. You can’t know it all. Nobody does.

Final Words

Now, it’s time to take some action. If you think that just reading this post and a few other posts on the internet can solve your problems with procrastination. You’re WRONG. It’s all about putting these methods into action. Begin with choosing your favorite method and try it for a few days and see how things will turn out.
